    A time-tested winner

I just moved into an apartment with a new synthetic carpet that sheds like a pack of afghan hounds; it choked my bagless vacuum in under a minute. I needed a sturdy, no-frills, bagged vacuum like the Montgomery Ward upright I used for over 20 years before it died. This model was almost identical, and now that I've had it for a few weeks, I'm happy as a clam. It has an old-fashioned rotating brush/beater roller, 5 carpet height adjustments, great suction for 5 amps, and comes pre-fitted with a humongous disposable liner bag (type F&G), plus a spare belt for the roller. Some parts that used to be steel have been replaced with thick plastic, but it seems plenty sturdy, and it's much lighter to maneuver and carry than my old all-steel model. The on/off button and lock/unlock for the handle are both on the base, so they're foot controls; carpet height is adjusted by a dial on the front of the base. The long cord (20 feet or so) doesn't retract, you just wind it over hooks... 5/5 pdever (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews This review is from: Eureka Boss Upright Vacuum, 1934B (Kitchen) I just moved into an apartment with a new synthetic carpet that sheds like a pack of afghan hounds; it choked my bagless vacuum in under a minute. A Great Floor Cleaner

It seems now days that everything has to be a Swiss Army Knife. Very few products do just one thing well. This is such a product. It cleans floors, bare or carpeted. I am an engineer and I love the way this vacuum cleaner is designed. Air flow is straight through to a very large bag. Don't get fooled by the 5 amp motor when the big heavy machines have 12 amps. Because of the straight air flow it isn't using power to get the air around corners. through small hoses, and out limited bag area. I have a 12 amp Hover and this Eureka cleans better. The 5 amp motor is also quieter and much lighter. This vacuum weighs only 11 pounds and is very maneuverable. The large area bags do a good job of filtering the air so you get no dust odor. The foot controls on the base for the handle and power are convenient and easy to operate. I guess because this is an old design that has been around a long time, Eureka doesn't advertise it and it is hard to find in stores. Believe me, it is... 5/5 Alan Mefford (Hilo, HI) - See all my reviews, June 28, 2009

Great bottle! Must have for cooks and coffee fiends!

Over the weekend I bought a Stanley thermal bottle. I've been wanting a thermal carafe for a while now, and this one has the capacity for a liter of coffee, tea, soup, etc.I was really jazzed about this specific bottle, because it is aesthetically rich in testosterone. The design seems to be straight out of the first half of the 20th century. So you know geeky-old-me, I had to perform a thermal performance test. I first pre-heated the bottle for several minutes using hot tap water. I filled the carafe to the brim with boiling water, and checked the temp using my probe thermometer. 205 degrees. This morning, exactly 8 hours after my initial measurement, I cracked the bottle for a second reading...an astonishing 177 degrees (I woulda thought 150-ish). The probe thermometer showed that the temperature of the room was 73 degrees, and I had the AC's thermostat constant the entire time.If you run the numbers through Newton's Law of Cooling, you find a K-value of... 5/5 R. Partially layman's physics; partially philosophy and history

About half of this book discusses the cutting edge of physics (with the necessary history) regarding the fate of the universe, and in particular, how vacuum (nothingness) in its modern quantum understanding plays a central role in the universe's evolution and ultimate future. The other half of this book is about philosophical issues such as the history of the concept of nothing and the number zero, the religious concepts of the history and future of the universe, and the mathematical history of zero and infinity. As the previous reviews of this book, and indeed, its subtitle "Vacuums, Voids, and the Latest Ideas about the Origins of the Universe" imply, this should have been a book about Physics and in particular, the physics of vacuums (quantum zero-point energy). One would expect a detailed treatment of this, without the extensive digressions from the primary topic. If that is what you are expecting, you will be disappointed; it is why I rate this book three... 3/5 Doug310 (New York City, NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Book of Nothing: Vacuums, Voids, and the Latest Ideas About the Origins of the Universe (Hardcover) About half of this book discusses the cutting edge of physics (with the necessary history) regarding the fate of the universe, and in particular, how vacuum (nothingness) in its modern quantum understanding plays a central role in the universe's evolution and ultimate future. How nothing became something

"Nothing is Real." --The Beatles, "Strawberry Fields Forever"As quoted by Professor Barrow on page 8, this is a pun on what the Beatles had in mind, and is in essence what this book is all about. Nothing is real in the sense that it is no longer the nothing that it once was. It is actually "something." On the next page, to further illustrate the point, Barrow quotes the lyric from Freddie Mercury (of Queen), "Nothing really matters." It does indeed! The impetus for this, Barrow's latest book on cosmology, seems to be the growing realization that the vacuum of space ("nothing") is not entirely empty, and in fact cannot in principle ever be empty. As Barrow explains in Chapter 7, "The Box that Can Never Be Empty," it would be a violation of the Uncertainty Principle because, "If we could say that there were no particles in a box, that it was completely empty of all mass and energy," we would have "perfect information about motion at every point and about the... 5/5 Dennis Littrell (SoCal) - See all my reviews, July 9, 2001

    Tour de Zero

An English don has written a tome about Nothing. It consists of 280 pages of text, 20 pages of quotes, 100 or so diagrams, followed by 50 pages of notes. Sounds like a cure for insomnia? You'll be mistaken, for Barrow takes us on a delightful journey through the history and science of Nothing. He traces the development of the mathematical zero in from ancient Babylonia and India to today's null graphs- a "pointless concept". The author also explains the old and modern theories and creation of physical void (e.g. Ether, vacuums, zero-point energy) , in the layman's language. Of course, as an erudite tour guide he has to discuss the philosophy behind it all while quoting from just about any source-newspaper advertisements to obscure thinkers. I do have a couple of quibbles about the book. One chapter less on vacuum would have better served the flow of ideas. The philosophical development of zero/shunya didn't stop in Asia as soon as they exported it to Europe. Buddhists... 5/5 Arun Rajagopalan (Troy, NY USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Book of Nothing: Vacuums, Voids, and the Latest Ideas About the Origins of the Universe (Hardcover) An English don has written a tome about Nothing. Wonderful coffee is the reward for patience ...

The Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. Smooth, full flavored, hot. This model requires more interaction than a percolator or drip coffeemaker. If you're not willing to participate in the coffee making process, don't purchase this coffeemaker. However, the end result is well worth the few extra minutes required. Some tips that may be useful:1.) Use coarse grinds to avoid clogging the filter;2.) When placing the upper chamber on the lower carafe, make sure there is a good seal between the two globes, as this will help in the vacuum process;3.) Always make sure there is at least a centimeter or two of water remaining in the lower carafe, otherwise the carafe will crack;4.) Allow the water and grinds to mix together in the upper chamber for a minute or two before removing from heat source (coarse grinds produce a weaker flavor compared to finer grinds, so allow a bit more time for the water to extract the flavor... 5/5 JT - See all my reviews This review is from: Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker (Kitchen) The Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. Over the learning curve.

I purchased my unit about a year ago from Amazon.com and after about a month of frustration with the filter constantly clogging, I put it out of sight (out of sight = out of mind). When I could get it to work properly, it was great because the coffee tasted the way it smelled - wonderful. But, it was simply not worth the time and effort to get one pot out of 15 to brew properly. I tried burr grinders and the inexpensive type grinders. I tried coarse grind, medium grind, fine grind and everything in between with no success.About two-months ago I remembered I had the Bodum Coffeemaker and so I decided to revisit the task of trying to make a 'perfect cup of coffee - and it worked perfectly!I use the Bodum Coffeemaker almost every day now and it works as advertised 100% of the time. Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffee Makers

0 5/5 Joanne Evens (Granite Bay, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker (Kitchen) I cannot rave enough about this treasure made in Copenhagen. I have used every conceivable type of coffee maker in the past, but this one is simply the best I have ever used. It is beautiful to look at, very easy to use and clean, and makes the best cup of coffee I have ever tasted. I ordered the electric version of this brand, but when it arrived, it had a defect, so I returned it immediately. I am so happy I didn't order the electric one because it was twice the amount of money that I paid for the non-electric one. I am going to tell all my friends about it--unfortunately you can't buy it in any stores, only through Amazon.com. Congratulations on carrying this absolute gem of a coffee maker!!
