Dark Ages America, The Final Phase of Empire

Creator: Morris Berman | History - 2006-04-01

A critical evaluation of the current American economy by the author of The Twilight of American Culture predicts that the United States will suffer a financial crisis in the wake of war costs and debts, compromises to democratic beliefs, ...

Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company

About this book
In Dark Ages America, the pundit Morris Berman argues that the nation has entered a dangerous phase in its historical development from which there is no return. As the corporate-consumerist juggernaut that now defines the nation rolls on, the very factors that once propelled America to greatness--extreme individualism, territorial and economic expansion, and the pursuit of material wealth--are, paradoxically, the nails in our collective coffin. Within a few decades, Berman argues, the United States will be marginalized on the world stage, its hegemony replaced by China or the European Union. With the United States just one terrorist attack away from a police state, Berman's book is a controversial and illuminating look at our current society and its ills.

Great portable vacuum to almost replace your real vacuum

I've had this vacuum (Australian model) for a couple of months now and am very happy. I definitely recommend it. It is so good it will probably replace using the larger Dyson DC 08 we have, or at least reduce the amount of times we have to pull it out.A few thoughts so far:ProsThis has the typical advantages of normal Dyson vacuum cleaners such as bagless, easy to use (and empty), great suction, etc but here are a few more+ Cordless means it is quick and easy to grab and use so it's great for cleaning up around the dining table and after the kids. I'm more likely to use this and vacuum occasionally, rather than waiting til everything is really dirty before dragging our big vacuum cleaner out+ Can use with or without the wand attachment which means it is much more flexible than an upright vacuum cleaner+ Solidly built and very easy to clean/use and move around.+ The suction is probably as good as my big Dyson (or almost as good). UPDATE: Dyson DC35 in a word: AWESOME

First ever Dyson product and we absolutely LOVE IT. Read all the reviews, blahblahblah, took the plunge and ordered it. After about a week of use, here's my take:- Suction is great. Don't know what planet the people are on who say it's lacking here. Oh, and BTW: Vacuum varies based on elevation, so if you live at like 9,000' yeah, ANY vacuum won't suck (or will suck, depending on where you're coming from).- Overall design is fantastic. Smart, smart, smart. Dyson obviously puts a LOT of thought into their design and I, for one, appreciate that.- Trigger: So I was concerned about this. But it's fine. Actually, it's (look for the theme, here) SMART. Why? Because you're looking at about 15 minutes runtime. Which is plenty. But the trigger forces you to turn the damn thing OFF when you move to another room, put it down to move a chair, whatever. Think about it: They put an ON/OFF switch and some dimwit will leave it on when they walk off to answer the phone, check... 5/5 Matt (Texas) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) CONVENIENT, BUT OVERPRICED AND LIMITED!

First, let me say that heretofore, I have been a big fan of Dyson, having bought and loved their DC 14 Animal approximately seven years ago, which I still have and use. I believe in spending money and getting what you pay for. However, with regard to Dyson's DC 35, you do not get what you pay for. Having read many reviews prior to purchasing this vacuum, I was concerned that some of them were overly critical, but I have found most to be very legitimate. One of the major disappointments, which could have been overcome, is the very short usage time after full charging, which is 13 minutes for normal cleaning and 6 for maximum cleaning, which is the only effective setting. This is a ridiculously short time, and if this were necessary, due to its strong cleaning capacity, Dyson should have included a second battery for their very high price of close to $300.00. In my opinion, with only one battery, this vacuum would be more fairly priced at approximately $150.00... 2/5 briannawilsey - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC35 Digital Slim Multi floor cordless vacuum cleaner (Misc.) Maybe a 4 star, not sure

So, I had a hard time trying to decide whether to give this 4 or 5 stars. I have never had any Dyson vacuums before so I can not compare it to other models. Most of our house is wood floors and we have two grown Labs and two older cats, so obviously we really get a lot of use out of a vacuum. It is a great vacuum, but not perfect.the good...Very convenient, I do not hesitate to grab this off the wall and do a quick spot cleaning. With my previous canister vacuum, I had to go to a storage drawer and pull out the canister and the detached hose and sections of extension tubes and various heads and the long unraveled cord, check the bag and if full change it then plug it in put it together and then after a few minutes of vacuuming go through the reverse process only to find more hair I may have missed because the cord didn't reach the remote areas. So rather than shlep all the parts out, I would just leave the hair for another time. This (to me) was a pain and more... 5/5 Scott Sherman "Mac User" - See all my reviews, September 3, 2012

    Good but not great.

The Dyson DC 44 Animal is a nice little cordless vac, but it's not everything I had hoped it to be. We have 2 dogs and a cat, a large house with a variety of floors, including hardwood, carpet, rugs over wood and tile. I purchased the DC44 Animal to touch up mostly the hardwoods and bathrooms when I don't want to drag out the large and very heavy Kirby vacuum that we have for our main vac and to pick up cobwebs in the corners and skylights. I have only had the DC 44 for about a week so I can't comment on whether it truly does not lose any suction, but so far I've considered the pros and cons and I am seriously considering taking this vac back because for $400, I honestly expected more. The good things about the DC44 is that it's very lightweight, and very maneuverable. It definitely gets into the corners of the rooms quite well. The dump cup is a little small, but I find that I can vacuum most of the wood floors in the house before I have to dump it. This vac is GREAT... 3/5 wildeflowers "wildeflowers" - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC44 Animal Digital Slim MK2 (Misc.) The Straight Scoop

Great product, but this is a lot of money to spend and it may not be for everyone. Here are my findings to help you decide if it's right for you. First off I gave it only 4 stars because of the price. In most cases this unit will not serve all your vacuuming needs so it will be a supplemental vacuum and that's a high price to pay for a helper unit. Still, depending on your situation, it may be worth it. I've become a Dyson fan due to previous purchases. I have the DC34 handheld model with the lithium ion battery. These batteries are great, both in life and charge time and after more than three years my beloved handheld is still performing like new and I use it nearly every day for multiple things. The battery on this DC44 is even stronger and has a longer run time.I was so impressed with that handheld unit that when my old upright gave out, I knew I'd be replacing it with a Dyson. I chose the DC25 for multiple floor surfaces and am very impressed with its suction... 4/5 C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA) - See all my reviews, September 5, 2012

I ordered this as an extra battery for my Dyson DC35 as the original battery that came with the vacuum did not really last for what I thought should be an ample amount of time. This battery definitely filled the bill. Instead of using it as a spare, I now use it every time I vacuum, keeping the original battery as a spare. Much better performance from this battery. I can vacuum all my rooms on one charge. And the price is right! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 31, 2014

PROS:Long battery life. Longer than OEM.Vacuum felt even stronger. Perhaps because OEM battery was starting to die.Priced better than what Dyson offered replacement battery ($75 + $8 shipping!)CONS:Battery is a little heavier than OEM.A little more details on my con. Because the battery is heavier, I assume because it has a higher capacity, it makes the entire unit heavier. I use the spring loaded wall mount to store my Dyson. The added weight does cause the spring to depress easier which, if you're not careful, could cause in accidental releases and the Dyson falling off the wall. Just something to be aware of.Other than that, I love my battery replacement. I was scared I was going to either have to pay Dyson for theirs or buy a new vacuum. Now I don't have to do either.Highly Recommend! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 24, 2014

Didn't live up to the Dyson name - comparison with Black & Decker Flex fvh1200 hand held vac

Dyson DC 34 handheld vs Black and Decker Flex fvh1200 handheldPurpose of purchase: Clean cat litter around cat box, cat hair on chairs, occasional spills; some dusting (ceiling fans, behind TV's). Also, we needed cordless vac to take out to the parking lot to clean the cars.I asked Santa for the Dyson handheld as a Christmas gift because we have a Dyson canister vac that we bought back in 2006 that really impressed us with how well it worked. It remains the best vacuum we've ever owned, but it cost a pretty penny - $500 at the time. However, it just really blew us away performance-wise, and proved the old adage of getting what one pays for.Based on that experience, and because we were disgruntled with the performance of our ancient, messy, corded handvac, we decided that dishing out the big bucks on a Dyson hand vac would be the way to go. the best suction!

I think dyson like bose is a bit overhyped and pricey, but for this handheld vac it truly is one of the best i've ever used. I like vacuuming so have tried many different handheld types (electrolux, hoover LINX, black and decker, stickvacs, handhelds, shoulder mounts, corded vs cordless, etc...). My latest prior to this was the hoover platinum LINX cordless (BH50030) which is pricey as well and highly rated. This is my comparison.I actually own the DC34 handheld, the DC35 stick vac and the hoover LINX equivalent handheld and stick vac. I've been around the block to say the least.SUCTION POWER:This is obviously the most important feature. for the handhelds, hoover is so-so. not sure why so many good reviews. suction falls off as it fills. the dyson has a button to increase the suction power. I just leave this on all the time but note this will decrease battery life significantly but for simple cleanup jobs still more than enough battery life. it blows away... 5/5 penlight - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) First dyson I've ever owned-got as a wedding gift(one of the only things I got to register for)

I own an old Victorian home with all hardwood throughout. When I convinced my bride-to-be that we needed a nice little vacuum to use on all of our steps so that we didn't have to lug around my 16 gallon shop-vac she finally caved. The day this thing was delivered to our house, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. Like most guys, I like fun new gadgets. Having a lot of battery powered tools, I made sure to read the directions carefully so that I didn't damage the life of the battery in any way. After following all of the factory recommended things, I was actually looking forward to doing a little cleaning. I was able to clean the dust in-between all of spindles going up 16 stairs. THEN IT QUIT! I had only been cleaning for literally 5 minutes(maybe 6). I thought it was just a fluke so I recharged and then had a novel idea... I was gonna clean the interior of my Honda accord. Good as new

The cord on my old DC07 wore out at the point where it was wound around the top hook. This replacement worked great if you are handy and willing to do a little work. It took me about 15 minutes to replace. You will need a Torx T10 screw driver to remove the plate covering the switch and some needle nose pliers to remove and install the clear plastic clips that protect the electrical fastners. The wires are color coded white and black so you can't mess it up. Unscrew the plate with the Torx screw driver. Mark the cord where it enters the boot. Remove the old cord and keep the clips and the rubber boot from the cord. Thread the new cord through the boot to the same length as the mark from the old cord. Put the boot back into the groove, then thread the new cord around the retaining screw in the channel. Using the old clear protective covers, connect the new cord to the white and black terminals on the switch. I am so glad I got this Hard Floor Tool! It works well on tile, wood floors, all throw rugs (thick, thin, fringed or not), dog beds, (non-delicate) upholstery and slip covers - everything! For reference, I have the Dyson DC-39. This tool fits fine.I had previously gotten the Dyson Articulating Hard Floor Tool, and really disliked it; the articulating tool works only on hard floors, period - no rugs or upholstery, so I was constantly switching between the turbine head, the upholstery tool, and the articulating tool. Ugh! With four large dogs in the house, I have to vacuum frequently, so all that switching was an annoyance. Plus, with those tools being highly specialized, sometimes there was NO tool for the job, such as for throw rugs with fringe. This Hard Floor Tool truly handles everything. Plus, it actually gets hard floors cleaner than the articulating tool does - it is a tad higher off the ground so it can better pick up "pellets" (e.g., pieces of dog... 5/5 border heeler (Michigan) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great for pet owners

0 5/5 warder (GA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Dyson Hard Floor Tool (Kitchen) This is a great attachment for cleaning if you have pets or hard floors. We use it to clean cat hair off sofas and just around on a regular hard floor around the edges.Works great and doesn't scratch the floor. We purchased the multi-attachment pack for the Dyson too, but use this separate purchase the most! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 23, 2010

    Worth the price

0 5/5 Gruberman - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Dyson Hard Floor Tool (Kitchen) I am a recent convert to the Dyson scene, and this Hard Floor Tool is awesome. We have new Brazilian cherry floors and this tool doesn't hurt the floor at all. No marks, nothing. The bristles help get up anything stuck in the little grooves between the pieces of flooring and it sucks up everything right up to the very edges. It also rotates totally flat so you can clean under couches without having to move them. This works great on the tile too. Cleaning the hardwoods and tile just got easier and a whole lot faster. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 15, 2011
