One Good Turn, A Natural History of the Screwdriver and the Screw

Creator: Witold Rybczynski | House & Home - 2001-08-28

Traces the history of the screwdriver from a sketch in da Vinci's pad to a later patent and mass production.

Publisher: Scribner

About this book
The Best Tool of the Millennium The seeds of Rybczynski's elegant and illuminating new book were sown by The New York Times, whose editors asked him to write an essay identifying "the best tool of the millennium." An award-winning author who once built a house using only hand tools, Rybczynski has intimate knowledge of the toolbox -- both its contents and its history -- which serves him beautifully on his quest. One Good Turn is a story starring Archimedes, who invented the water screw and introduced the helix, and Leonardo, who sketched a machine for carving wood screws. It is a story of mechanical discovery and genius that takes readers from ancient Greece to car design in the age of American industry. Rybczynski writes an ode to the screw, without which there would be no telescope, no microscope -- in short, no enlightenment science. One of our finest cultural and architectural historians, Rybczynski renders a graceful, original, and engaging portrait of the tool that changed the course of civilization.

    New Roomba vs. Old

If you are new to Roomba, you will wonder if it is worthwhile. The answer is clearly YES, since anything it cleans is that much less for you to clean. However, which is better, the old (and cheaper) Roomba, or the new models like the 530?First, the 530 comes with the charging/base station, and this is very useful. I have placed this in the entranceway which leads into the livingroom, the kitchen or the bedroom. Using the virtual walls (included), I block off rooms so that it can only do the entranceway + 1 other room. I simply press the "Clean" button, and it backs itself off the charging stand and then spends the next 2 hours cleaning, finally returning to the charging stand. Nice!Should you upgrade from an older model Roomba (I now use my old Roomba upstairs)? It depends on your situation. By-the-way, the old virtual walls do NOT work with the new Roomba.New Roomba:Fall down stairs? NeverClimb onto thick throw rugs... 4/5 D. C. It's Like a Beloved Pet Who MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER

Awesome. This new generation fixes all the problems of the previous. Much smarter, much bigger dust bin, much better in every way. Great that it self-docks when tired. Maintanence is a snap...really could not be easier/faster. There are some negatives - how could there not be? - but this thing has such a contagious personality that it starts feeling like your pet, and you're inclined to forgive, and even find the faults charming. You have to prep the room (cords up and out of the way, no papers or clutter on the floor, move small items out of the room and learn which objects present problems and get them out of the way). Performance varies on throw rugs (it's great on rug/carpet surfaces themselves, but Roomba can get caught up as it travels over edges of throw rugs that don't have much weight or cling). It's good at slowing down and banging objects gently, but less so on narrow vertical objects (e.g. piano legs), which it really clunks (not enough to damage, but it will... 5/5 New Yawkuh "New Yawkuh" (Queens, NY United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, White (Kitchen) Awesome. A Great Product Made Even Better

With two dogs in the house we could not live without our Roomba. The 530 is a vast improvement from earlier models. It seems to pick up more dirt, the battery life is longer, the fast-charge is about 33% more rapid than its Discovery predecessors and it is generally more quiet. The new sensors that prevent the robot from "speed-bumping" into furniture are a very nice touch, but beware if the robot is in a tight area, it may appear sluggish -- the sensors are working to continually slow it down. It's a feature I like, but need to get used to.My only concern with this robot is the high cost of parts. The bot itself is cheaper than earlier models but the components most prone to breakage or wear-out are twice the cost so the lifetime operation costs may be higher. Replacement batteries are nearly $100. Earlier models were $50.ONE MONTH LATER ....This is a slight amend to my review above. Having used it for a month a couple points of... 5/5 damg1 "damg" (Tulsa, OK) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, White (Kitchen) With two dogs in the house we could not live without our Roomba. The Roomba 500 series almost perfected.

I've got three Roomba 500s (a pair of 560s and a 570), and I love 'em. Rock solid reliable, easy to work on, and do a great job keeping my floors clean. These Roombas aren't toys, they actually clean the floors. In fact I've gone behind them with my Dyson just out of morbid curiosity and all I got was an empty bin. Sure, a Roomba can't pick up as much dirt as a regular vacuum in one pass, but that's why they're programmed to cover the same area of carpet multiple times. And in some ways the Roomba is better than my Dyson. Why?Areas of my house that get vacuumed every week without effort:* Under my bed.* Under my dresser.* In the back corners of my closet where a regular vacuum can't go.* Underneath my reclining theater seats.* Under my basement work bench and utility sink.* ...and on and on...The 600s series is even better, as they include the Aero Vac dust bin, and the upgraded cleaning head module from the 700... 5/5 Ryan Barnhart (Cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2012

    IRobots never die

This is my fourth IRobot and they never seem to die. The first three are still going strong after several years of use, without any problems or any repairs aside from a yearly new battery. Just make sure to leave these plugged into the wall, sitting in their docks, all the time to keep the battery from dying prematurely. It also helps to preserve the battery to fully run them at least once a week but it's not critical to do that.I empty the dirt canisters and clean the brushes after every use, which I don't find to be a problem at all. I have a Scuba also, the floor mopping robot, of the same brand, and it also is a workhorse. I've told all my friends about my IRobots, and several have gotten them and love them too. One of them said that after a while his Roomba started going in circles but I told him to turn it over and check out the brush and front wheel for anything caught on it and sure enough, he cleaned a long thread from the front drive wheel and it's good as... 5/5 AKN - See all my reviews, October 19, 2012

    iRobot 630 best purchase!

0 5/5 KHenery - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: iRobot Roomba 630 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) I recently purchased the iRobot 630 for Pets and it has gone above and beyond my expectations. I have an 80 lb. Lab and a huge longhaired cat, so I was skeptical of how this vacuum would handle all of the animal hair and dirt they track inside. I have to say this vacuum does a better job than I do manually vacuuming with my Dyson! My roomba carefully cleans along the baseboard and legs of furniture with her brush to remove any and all traces of pet hair, dust, and debris. As well, it has no problem cleaning an assortment of rugs including a large cowhide. The iRobot uses a zig zag type manuever to ensure all 1200 sq ft is perfectly clean. Cleaning the brushes and emptying the disposal unit is a breeze, and it keeps its charge for about 2 hours. After it has finished its cleaning cycle, or is tired the Roomba carefully docks itself back onto the charger. I would definately reccomend this product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 21, 2012

Great but not perfect ***Downgraded Star Rating***

My wife and I decided to get one of these because our 8 month old son is about to start crawling. While we try and keep our floors clean, our beagle has other thoughts as she sheds all over the place. We went with the latest 560 model as it has just about everything we would want with a product like this. It works as advertised and we will definitley keep it but there are some areas that need improvement. Here is a quick breakdown of the pros and consPros1. Quieter than a standard vaccuum2. Seems to learn the room dimensions quickly. The virtual walls and lighthouse feature are very nice.3. Is "smart" enough to avoid getting tangled in our area rugs4. Obviously easy to use as it is just a push of a button (or even better when you program it)5. Can use everyday to keep the floors spotless6. Have successfully used it on hard wood, vinyl, carpet and (accidently) concrete7. Cleans... 4/5 M. Kelley "mpkelley20" (MA United States) - See all my reviews, September 16, 2007

A Worthy Successor to the Roomba Line

We have two Roombas plus a Scooba in our house. When one of the batteries on one of our Roombas finally reached the end of its life cycle, we decided to donate that Roomba to a friend and to get ourselves the new top of the line - the Roomba 560. We got this right when it first came out, but we waited several months before posting a review. It's pretty much impossible to review one of these Roombas after only a few days! It takes weeks if not months to start to see how well they last over time, and what breaks down. Believe me - been there, done that.So now it's many months later, and I have to say, we are quite pleased with the improvements of this Roomba over the previous generations of Roombas. So first, for those who don't even have ANY Roomba yet (hard to believe!). Roombas are awesome. We have cats, and we work from home so we're home all day. It is AMAZING how much dirt and dust and junk collects in the carpet every single day. Who really has time to vacuum their... 5/5 Lisa Shea "be the change you wish to see in t... - See all my reviews, December 12, 2007

Beware of the "new" Roomba 560 now only for single room (updated review)

UPDATE 12/19/2011My review in late 2007 describing the red side brush "amputee" problem and poor customer support is still the highest rated critical response on Amazon. Because of that experience, the recounting of which is in the original review appended below after this update, I had not bought an iRobot product in over four years. Now I have bought two "new" 560s, which arrived today (more about "new" below). This update is primarily for (i) previous owners of a 560 that are contemplating buying a "new" 560 or (ii) those that have information on the original 560 and mistakenly believe that this is what they will get if they order a "new" 560.If it were not for the problems discussed in this update, I would raise my rating to 3.5 stars. Once again, I think iRobot may be shooting itself in the foot. And what upsets me is that I really want to see this company succeed.By way of disclosure I have owned several of every generation of Roomba. Review From A Robotic Vacuum Junkie!!

Customer Video Review Length:: 5:52 Mins As some of you may know by now I love Robotic Vacuums so any chance I get to right a review on one I take it. Over the past 7 years I have owned probably over 12 robotic vacuums. Most being Irobot Roombas. I started with the Roomba Red and feel in love since. The Roomba Red performed very well for an early bird on the robotic vacuum market. I have owned almost all models of the Roomba all the way up to the current 670 I own. I also own a Neato XV11 and a LG Hombot. At one time I even had a Canadian Samsung Navibot and loved it until it wore out. Ok now onto the main star for today the Moneual MR6550 Rydis. Hope you had a chance to view my short video and if it helps anyone then that is great. I received the Rydis about a week ago and was very impressed with the packaging, not cheap, but very well designed and a lot of details were printed on exterior but who really cares about the outside it's what is side that counts. I quickly unboxed it and... 4/5 Michael Countryman "mike the camera man" (pelzer, sc) - See all my reviews, February 25, 2013

Adequate, but not great - 3.5 stars

The biggest problem I have with this unit is the lack of a floor-height sensor. We have about 2,000 square feet of hardwood downstairs, but all the bedrooms are carpeted and the bathrooms and laundry room are tiled. The 3/4" hardwood stands 1 1/2" higher than the tile or carpet, as there is 3/4" plywood foundation under it. The robot will drive off the wood and then promptly get stuck in whatever room it comes to. You MUST close doors if you use this on hardwoods, or you'll be searching for your stranded robot. The vacuum works fairly well, but it is not revolutionary by any means. My wife and I got it set up and put it to work and found that the vacuuming power of the unit is not that great, as we put sawdust on a rug and let the robot loose. The robot started by making random passes at what appeared to be 45-degree angles and didn't really come back to cover the areas it missed. It just ran off the edge of the rug, then onto the hardwood and down the hall. It... 4/5 TheTerrorBeyond (Tartarus) - See all my reviews This review is from: Moneual MR6550 Rydis Hybrid Robot Vacuum and Dry Mop Cleaner (Misc.) Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) Flawed design--not ready for consumers

I've been running the Moneual for a few months now, and I've definitely concluded that it is way inferior to my latest-generation Roomba. In fact, it drives me nuts and sometimes barely works. It is constantly (constantly!) getting stuck on everything from heating vents in the floor to literally the wall itself--it starts climbing the molding and gets stuck half on the wall. It is also constantly getting clogged on the input slot. The pet hair/dirt/whatever gets in the slot but not all the way into the dust trap, so it clogs and either gives an error message or keeps going without picking much more up. I have to use a hand vacuum to clear the input slot at least twice on an average run.Over and over, the Roomba makes me happy and this Moneual irritates me. If you are going to buy a robotic floor vacuum, I urge you not to spend your money on this vacuum but choose a Roomba instead.Other thoughts: In one test I did, I ran each robot on different... 1/5 Unity Dienes (Hollis, NH) - See all my reviews, March 14, 2013

Long Time Roomba User Extremely Happy with New Version

I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery2. Difficult to clean3. Noisy4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new... 5/5 Jacob Hantla "hantla.com" (Chandler, AZ United States) - See all my reviews, September 13, 2004

The Roomba--Does it work or not? The answer is surprising.

This was a pretty hard purchase for me. The reasons were 1) It was a pretty expensive item and 2) The reviews for this product were very extreme--from high praise to the pits. (See previous review about the person who returned *four* of them. Hard to believe, actually.) But the promise of an automated robot that would do the daily vacuuming was too much to turn down and I decided to take a chance on the Roomba Discovery. The odds were in my favor as the store I purchased it from offered a 60-day money back guarantee. If it didn't work, no problem.I unpacked the Roomba Discovery and found these items packed with it: the Roomba, battery pack, charger, two infra-red "wall" devices, a cleaning utility brush, a couple of extra air filters, a wall mount kit, the home charging base, a remote control and associated manuals, advertisements and offers. The Roomba Discovery and all its contents were fimrly and snuggly packed inside their foam enclosures. Better Than You Are

It's very easy to set up: I just plugged in the battery and the charger, pressed the buttons like the little instruction guide told me, and it hopped on there and started charging.I let the Roomba wander around for a half hour this morning, and aside from a horrible mishap with my bath mat it did well. Although somewhere inside its little chipular head there is a rhyme and reason to its journey, I could not discern it.Sometimes it gets stuck, and I just keep an ear out to hear if it needs help. It spent a good two minutes trying to hump a floor lamp, but like an errant cat I swatted at its bumper and it was discouraged. It's not as loud or as powerful as I thought it might be--it's a different kind of vacuuming. It's basically a sort of robust electric sweeper with a brain. It sometimes has trouble with rug tassels and edges. The acrylic rugs, which are light, peel up off the floor easily and obstruct. The wool rugs are heavier and less... 4/5 M. Wolfe (Gotham) - See all my reviews, April 12, 2005
