    How to Hatch a Dinosaur - Thomas Hayden - Wired - RichardDawkins.net

  • Oct 07, 2011 from DrKyawwwin(DrKyawwin)
    DrKyawwwin People have told Jack Horner he’s crazy before, but he has always turned out to be right. In 1982, on the strength of seven years of undergraduate study, a stint in the Marines, and a gig as a paleontology researcher at Princeton, Horner got a job at Montana State University’s Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. He was hired as a curator but soon told his bosses that he wanted to teach paleontology. “They said it wasn’t going to happen,” Horner recalls. Four years and a MacArthur genius grant later, “they told me to do whatever I wanted to.” Horner, 65, continues to work at the museum, now filled with his discoveries. He still doesn’t have a college degree.

    When he was a kid in the 1950s, dinosaurs were thought to have been mostly cold, solitary, reptilian beasts—true monsters. Horner didn’t agree with this picture. He saw in their hundreds-of-millions-of-years-old skeletons hints of sociability, of animals that lived in herds, unlike modern reptiles. Then, in the 1970s, Horner and his friend Bob Makela excavated one of the most spectacular dinosaur finds ever—a massive communal nesting site of duck-billed dinosaurs in northwest Montana complete with fossilized adults, juveniles, and eggs. There they found proof of crazy idea number one: The parents at the site cared for their young. Judging by their skeletons, the baby duckbills would have been too feeble to forage on their own.

    Horner went on to find evidence suggesting that, once hatched, the animals were fast-growing (crazy idea number two) and possibly warm-blooded (that would be three), and he continues to be at the forefront of the search for ancient bits of organic matter surviving intact in fossils (number four). Add in his work as a technical consultant on the Jurassic Park movies and Horner has probably done more to shape the way we currently think about dinosaurs than any other living paleontologist.

    All of which means that people are more cautious about calling him crazy these days, even when he tells them what he plans to do next: Jack Horner wants to make a dinosaur. Not from scratch—don’t be ridiculous. He says he’s going to do it by reverse-evolving a chicken. “It’s crazy,” Horner says. “But it’s also possible.”

    Over the past several decades, paleontologists—including Horner—have found ample evidence to prove that modern birds are the descendants of dinosaurs, everything from the way they lay eggs in nests to the details of their bone anatomy. In fact, there are so many similarities that most scientists now agree that birds actually are dinosaurs, most closely related to two-legged meat-eating theropods like Tyrannosaurus rex and velociraptor.

    Review: Dyson DC25 Animal

  • Sep 10, 2010 from CrunchGear in *
    CrunchGear Short Version: I really struggled with this one. As someone who is notoriously cheap, I had serious reservations about reviewing a vacuum cleaner that has an MSRP of $549. I mean, seriously? What could make this particular vacuum so much better then the old standby bagless that I picked up for $100 at the local retail store. Well, Im here to tell you: I was wrong. The Dyson DC25 Animal is a great vacuum cleaner, and if you can afford one buy it.

    Features:

    Never loses suction
    Ball technology makes it easy to maneuver
    Animal model picks up pet hair like nobodys business

    Pros:

    Seriously, it never loses suction
    Attachments actually work
    Dust catcher is really easy to remove

    Cons:

    Price
    No where to attach the mini-turbine attachment

    Full Review:
    So what could make a vacuum so cool that its worth $549? Well, Im here to tell you that the Dyson really sucks. Hard. In fact, the first time you use it, youll be seriously surprised at the amount of dust and dirt itll pull out of your carpet. A little backstory I live in Nevada, and we have dust. Its just part of life, we have dust storms, wind, and all kinds of nasty weather. As a result no matter how clean you keep your house, you still get dust. Ive had various other brands of vacuums in the past, and they did a reasonable job, but I was quite honestly surprised at how well the DC25 cleans. When I moved into my current home, it had new carpet. So Im very much aware of the age of the inexpensive carpet that we put down. The Dyson was able to actually restore some of the nap of the carpet, to the point that it actually felt like new.
    The model Im reviewing today is the DC25 Animal. This particular model is specifically designed for people with pets, and we have 3 cats in my household. As a result, we get cat hair everywhere, and its a pain to keep the furniture clean. One thing that has always annoyed me about other vacuum cleaners is the attachments. Why on earth do they bother to include that miniature upholstery brush that is supposed to spin using the force of the suction, but it never works? Well, Im here to tell you that the Dyson version works. This means that I dont have to set the couch cushions on the floor and vacuum them, I can just plug the extension hose into the mini-turbine, and it spins. Not only that, but when I actually touch the mini-turbine to the couch fabric, it keeps spinning. This was literally the feature that made me go, yeah, this vacuum is worth the money.
    All is not perfect with the DC25 though, there were a couple of things that annoyed me. Specifically, the mini-turbine doesnt attach to the vacuum anywhere. You have to put it somewhere safe, and hope you dont forget where you put it. On cheaper vacuum cleaners it snaps onto the body of the cleaner, Im not really sure why thats not the case with the Dyson. The other issue is with the main beater. If you (or your significant other) has long hair, sooner or later youre going to have to clean that beater. And the disassembly process to get at the beater is a pain. Of course, thats not a problem particular to the Dyson, but I expected it to have some kind of magic blade that would make the hair not wrap around the beater brush. Maybe in the next version.
    Conclusion: I really, really like the Dyson. I was prepared to dismiss it as an overpriced gimmick, but Im actually happy to say that I was wrong. Despite the price, the Dyson DC25 Animal is easy to recommend to people. Its a truly great product that does exactly what they show it doing on the commercials. My hat is off to you, James Dyson.

  • Sep 08, 2010 from techwhack in *

PRANK ME! allows the user to choose a fictitious character, create a prank telephone script, and then generate a professionally voiced prank phone call, which can be made anonymously. Version 1.08 features 22 additional characters added which brings the total to 48 characters and over 1100 audio sayings to choose from for pranking, with highly anticipated feature for Recording Your Own Character.
    College Station, Texas JBMJBM today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of 22 Additional Characters and a highly requested, highly anticipated Record Your Own Character feature for their very popular, Entertainment Category Top 50, PRANK ME! app for the iPhone.
    This app allows the user to choose a fictitious character, create a prank telephone script, and then generate a professionally voiced prank phone call, which can be made anonymously. The Record Your Own Character feature allows the user to use their own voice to create their own personalized pranking character. The user can add their own face picture, their own script, and best of all, their own audio to the app.
    The 48 Characters now include:

    One of the most clever and flexible methods ever devised for making prank phone calls, PRANK ME! offers jokesters a new, hi-tech advantage. The app opens with cartoon renderings of classic characters and after choosing a character the user can choose and order a group of phrases to create a complete, scripted message.
    For example, six different phrases can be put together to create the following message, pre-recorded by a professional voice-over artist: This is Timothy A. Warrenton from the Internal Revenue Service, better known as the IRS. We have a matter we need to urgently talk with you about. It has come to our attention that you owe $10,545.00 in back taxes.
    Given the variety of characters and dialogue, the fun-loving digerati will have no trouble putting one over on a close friend, family member, or lucky stranger. The app sports fun graphics, an easy to use interface, and free updates of additional characters and phrases. Eliminated are awkward attempts at disguising ones voice. A library of professional male and female voices is included.
    App Features:
    * 48 Characters
    * Over 1100 Audio Sayings
    * Record Your Own Character Feature
    * Sequence Feature
    * Pre-Packaged Feature
    * Re-Order Feature
    * Youve Been Pranked Voicemail Feature
    * PRANK ME! App Blog Feature
    * New Voices Guarantee Feature
    We basically took the suggestions and complaints of other mediocre pranking apps and we ran with itadding more characters, more features, better instructions, easier user interface, and topped it off with stellar graphics, commented Brice Milliorn, CEO of JBMJBM, LLC. This app has become way more popular than we every thought, it now has worked itself into the Top 50 apps in the Entertainment Category,
